GUIDE for writing a code of ethics

Listed below are examples of codes of ethics. This template is to be used as an example to write a code of ethics that is most appropriate for your agency.

Ethics is commonly referred to as doing what's right, fair, honest and legal. It is the set of rules or standards of conduct governing the agency operations.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The primary purpose of developing a code of ethics is to ensure that the agency has in place ethical guidelines for conducting business.

Professional relationships

Example:

You are expected to keep the business interest in mind and not use your position for personal gains.

Example:

You are expected to abide by the General Statutes and other governing policies and procedures while performing your duties.

Note:

Uniformed personnel recognizable by the State must especially be law-abiding citizens.

Example:

You are expected to keep confidential and sensitive information protected and not release or disclose that information to any unauthorized sources.

Example:

You are expected to strive to meet the highest level of competence and strengthen that level on a continual basis.

Ethical standards

Examples:

  • You are expected to lead by example and to seek expert advice when in doubt.
  • You are expected to act in a professional manner at all times, especially when you have been disrespected.
  • You are expected to present information that is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge.
  • You are expected to use the policies and procedures to support your decisions for completing actions.

Example:

You should not be involved in any activities that suggest that your personal interests (or those of a friend) have influenced decisions made no behalf of the agency.
